These expressions "salt of the earth" and "light of the world" are mentioned in the Christian Bible. Jesus Christ, in the very first book of the New Testament, calls on his followers to be salt of the earth and the light of the world. Light of the world is easy to understand. In fact, many people who are not even Christians, understand this light to be analogous to a person who speaks the truth. It is someone who exposes lies and deception and brings understanding and knowledge to confusion. Salt of the earth, however, is somewhat vague. Even from ancient history, salt has been used as both a preservative and a flavour enhancer to foods. So, many Christians believe that being salt of the earth means being someone who preserves life in all people and one who brings out the best in other people. Indeed, everyone can be these two things - salt and light. But for a Christian who is true to his or her faith - that is, Jesus is God who became man, who died on the cross to save the godless, resurrected to life and shall return again to earth, and he is Lord of all - being salt and light is not born out of self-will which can produce pride and self-worship but rather are the results of God’s will working organically through the person.
