I have a huge respect for the written word, specifically when arranged in the form of a great story. If I could write a story myself so captivating that readers wouldn't be able to put it down through to the quiet hours of the morning, a story so powerful it would conume their thoughts during the hours of the day, a story so compelling it would remove them from reality completely for pages at a time, if I could write a story like that I would need nothing else.
Well, maybe I would need a few other things, like my beautiful wife and baseball and good food and great friends. And then there's that whole "What happens when you die" question. It really doesn't matter what you believe, when you die you can't take the great things you accomplished with you. They stay here while you certainly do not.
Qualifications aside, however, I am a writer. And I am fascinated with that near supernatural occurance between author and reader, as it takes place through the medium of the written word. Check out my blog: American Story Jar for some of my more lengthy thoughts on literature.
