This year in IB Prep, I made a simple machine after the model of Rube Golberg. The objective was to build a machine that would knock a ping-pong ball off its perch. The machine had to have certain requirements, like having at least three basic parts (pulley, lever, etc.). The machine and all its parts had to be at least 5 feet away. If the machine had success in functioning, you would get a perfect score. If you knocked the ball off its perch, it was a extra 20% on your grade. This class also has movie making, online website building, the study of famous people and their achievements, and the connection of subjects. We have been working on an assignment called 20% project. In the beginning of the year, all students picked a topic (learning a new language, the study of being a doctor) and devoted their projects in ways of learning more of their subjects. The IB- STEM class has been educational in the Approaches to Learning area with a mix of technology, math, and engineering.
