For the longest time, I’ve been really interested in sound, whether it be some kind of brown noise or the newest pop songs. I never really took it anywhere other than listening to music, but after a while I started to specifically listen to albums that I had never heard before. When I was still doing this little project, I would document the stuff that I had listened to, and write a short, maybe a sentence long, blurb about whatever I had just listened to. On top of this, I would pick my favorite song, my least favorite song, and give the album an overall rating. By doing this project, I’d found some of my favorite albums that have been released in the last five years, from Melt by Not For Radio to A Matter of Time by Laufey.

What had originally started as a simple hobby to try new music had quickly turned into a whole project that let me escape from the world for a little while. I don’t have any real background in musical education, but going through these albums really gave me a new perspective on music, and I like to think that I lost any sense of pretentiousness that I used to have had before. One of my main takeaways from this project was that music with a complicated sound can be a lot of fun, but, after everything, I still like to lean more towards music I’m more familiar with. It gives off a kind of feeling of familiarity, and I think most people can relate to wanting to stay in their comfort zone. But after leaving my comfort zone to explore other artists, I truly believe that I have improved my ability to listen to different things, since some of the albums have a very unique and diverse sound. But, overall, I think I would want to do it again, as long as I still have the time to do it.
