Jeff Horton
Superintendent in Duluth, MN
Dr. Jeff Horton from Duluth, Minnesota, is a passionate educator currently serving as Superintendent of the GFW Public Schools.
As a civilian and an educator, Jeff DWI loves empowering other people to help themselves in their own lives. He's always been a believer in the "give a man a fish, feed him for a day; teach a man to fish, feed him for life" kind of mentality, and works passionately to help people develop the skills and the confidence they need to succeed in their ways. For Jeff, helping others is more than just performative; he's not looking to make a difference in the lives of those around him to make himself feel better or feel like he's accomplished something. Rather, Jeff wants to create an environment where everyone feels empowered and equipped to build their own paths.
While working with his brother to train high school hockey players in high school, Jeff got his first teaching experience. He worked alongside the players to help them practice the motions and polish their gifts, and the team tied the game when they first faced their opponents. They won their next game after devoting time and attention to improving themselves individually and as a team. Jeff DWI saw how much he liked working with children, aiding them in realizing their greatest potential, and motivating them to succeed while sharing their success. He rapidly realized that the draw of teaching was more than just the coaching or the ability to share his knowledge with others. It was about the gratification he had when he helped someone complete a task.
In conjunction with his work in equity, Dr. Jeff Horton is fascinated with technology and its impact on the world around us, including education. We've been able to connect around the globe in ways like never before and share information and insights in an entirely new and revolutionary way through technology. It's also helped take education from a straight and narrow discipline and expanded it to include more ways for people to learn and educate themselves and others.
Technology is also bridging the gap for students with disabilities to better connect with and absorb the educational material. He knows that an engaged student is a good student, and if we can work to increase the students' engagement, we can also improve their learning.
