What birds stay in Minnesota for the winter? As winter approaches each year, many migratory birds and some seasonal species make their way to this northern state. Migratory birds fly from southern Canada and the United States all the way to Alaska and back. Of course there are various other birds that migrate to this frozen cold state as well.
There are some birds that are only able to be found in certain seasons. Some of these birds are snow geese, caribou, and white-crowned sparrows just to name a few. Of course there are many different types of birds that can be found all over North America. However, most birds that are found in Minnesota remain in the state through the entire year. A good example of this is the snowy owl.

The snowy geese migrate all the way from the eastern half of the United States to the western half during the winter months. They have a very short flight in which they can travel only a couple of hundred miles before returning to their winter location. Even though these migratory birds do not migrate all winter long, they will come back each year to nest and to feed.
When we talk about birds that migrate we need to realize that they are birds that are looking for new and warmer locations. They are not looking to stay around the same place all winter long. This is the same reason why a lot of birds will move from a tree to a ledge. A rockery is usually the same area that they go to nest. When it comes to migration, you can expect that most birds will exit their nesting areas through the same place. This is usually a sandy area.
As for the migrating birds, you will find that they leave their nests at a time when the temperatures are the lowest. This is usually around mid-December into January. In order for the birds to survive the winter they have to migrate and try to survive the cold weather as long as they can. As the migratory birds to leave the area, they begin to prepare for their long flight back to their winter home.
Many bird watchers will notice that the migrating birds will have some changes in their appearance. They will be taking on the color of the ground and they will also be taking on the color of their wings. The male will be red in the fall and they will have a black patch on their chest. It is common for the female to have some blue around the breast area.
