I am currently a senior at George Mason University with the intent to graduate on May 16, 2014. As a student of theatre, I have had the opportunity to work in many areas of theatrical costuming. Through my education I gained valuable skills in design and construction, along with the communication and management skills that are needed in a collaborative art like theatre. For the past three years I have been an intern in George Mason University’s costume shop. Through my internship and class work, I have learned pattern drafting, draping, millinery, corsetry and craft.
Currently, I am working on an independent study of a build of two early nineteenth century costumes, one male and one female. Through this project, I have had to drape, draft patterns, create mock-ups, fit, adjust patterns, and stitch the final pieces together. I must schedule all fittings with the actors, make sure they are completed in a timely and efficient manner. Along with selecting proper textiles and conducting significant amount of historical research. The course was designed to emphasize the skills necessary to enter the arena of pattern construction at a regional theater level.
Beginning May 19th 2014, I will begin work as a stitcher and wardrobe crew for Wolf Trap Opera during there summer season. In August I will being work at Merrimack Repertory Theatre in Lowell, MA as there full time Costume Apprentice for there up coming 2014/2015 season.
