“Before you tell your life what you intend to do with it, listen for what it intends to do with you. Before you tell your life what truths and values you have decided to live up to, let your life tell you what truths you embody, what values you represent.” ― Parker J. Palmer

If I do nothing else in my life, I want to help everyone whose path I cross learn to listen to themselves and to speak honestly from the inside out. As a writer and as a woman, I have been doing this--or struggling to do this--all of my life. As a teacher, I create a classroom where my students can write about themselves and their world honestly and with passion, anger, humor and humility.

And in my starring role, as a mother, I am raising two young boys in the only messy, imperfect and authentic way I know how so that someday they can stand tall and define their own truths and not bow to the truths our culture tells them they must represent.
