I started playing volleyball when I was eleven years old, and after that it became the only sport I continued to play throughout middle and high school and still today. I played on a travel team for a club for six years, and played for my school team the whole time as well. My high school volleyball team came to be the one I loved and cherished the most, and we ended up winning 2 state championship titles back to back.
Unfortunately at the beginning of my senior year I tore my ACL, and I was obviously sad to no longer get to play my final season of volleyball. However, I was able to wait to get surgery until after the season ended, and I was actually able to do rehab and play with a brace, just at a less intense level. My coach put me in for a play in our second state championship game though, and that is something I will never forget.
While getting an injury like that was a difficult experience, through my time spent with doctors and athletic trainers and physical therapists, I figured out what I really wanted my career to be. I had known already for a couple years that I like science and biology and wanted to go into medicine, but this experience made me learn that I really was interested in sports medicine.
So now that is what I am here at UGA studying to do! I plan to go to medical school after I graduate, and I hope one day to be a team doctor or even surgeon for a college or professional sports team.
