"ROLL DAWGS ROLL!" This small, yet apparently now offensive phrase, was the cry of my heart this year’s football season. Growing up a University of Alabama fan, I knew when attending the University of Georgia, the hardest transition would be in the area of football. Before the beginning of the football season, I made it a point to find out when Alabama and Georgia would play each other in the future. Based on regular season schedules, the teams would not face off for another three seasons. “That is plenty of time to mentally prepare myself” I reasoned. False. Before long, it was announced that Alabama and Georgia would be playing in the National Championship, the most intense and emotionally-charged game of the entire year. Soon after, the phrase “Beat Bama” was rampant around campus. There was a pang in my heart every time I heard or saw the saying. I was beyond confused. Was I supposed to cheer for the team I was raised on? Or would it be assumed of me to support my college’s team? Furthermore, giving my allegiance to both teams was not an option, it is football, after all. Next thing I knew, it was January 8 and I was sitting in the Stegman Coliseum with a thousand other of my fellow Dawgs, still doing soul-searching, trying to decide to which football team my heart belonged. To this day, the internal searching continues.
