My Story:
Howdy, I’m Jenn. I've been singing and writing songs since I could speak. I went on my first tour with my Bluegrass band at 9 years old.
Born to songwriting parents, I grew up behind the curtain of the music business. It struck me how much getting a major record deal depended on business acumen rather than raw talent… how you can hear the best band ever in an empty dive bar and then turn on the radio to hear something that feels inauthentic.
So, I did something about it.
I started a collective called Theory Trick (sold in 2012) by recruiting some of the brightest minds in the music business, from producers and managers to videographers and stylists - we gathered quarterly to vote on 1-2 artists. We agreed to work for free or at a deeply discounted rate to try and elevate incredible musicians who just didn't know how to get their careers started.
Meanwhile, I was gigging around Portland, OR with my pop/post-ska/funk big band called Grooveyard multiple nights a week for a decade. What a ride! We had some incredible adventures and moments.
From there, I moved to LA. I had something to prove to myself - that I am a musician, not just a frontwoman. I played solo shows up and down the Sunset Strip and wrote my solo album, Tales from the Deep Blue.
Then I got married and had babies. I was ready to play in a band again, and The Heritage came to life! Stylistically best described as ‘mountain-pop’ (by the legend himself, T. Michael Coleman), our sound is a true amalgamation of all the styles I've been marinating in over the years.
Happily married mom of 3, based in Austin, TX.
Accolades include:
Grand Prize in the John Lennon Songwriting Contest with our song, Other Lives (which inspired the novel of the same name)
Finalist placement in the American Songwriting Awards
…and some cute trophies from winning vocal contests on the Bluegrass festive circuit.
