Jenny (Yu-Wen) Chen 陳郁文

Senior Archivist in Dunedin, New Zealand

Jenny, originally from Taiwan, moved to New Zealand in 1993 with her immediate family, settling in Auckland, where she was raised.

Since 2005, Jenny has resided in Dunedin, where she embarked on her artistic journey, culminating in a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with a major in Printmaking in 2010.

To expand her administrative and curatorial skills within the arts sector, she pursued a Postgraduate Diploma in Art Curatorship at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch, before returning to Dunedin.

In the early stages of her career, Jenny took on the role of Production Manager for the Dunedin Midwinter Celebrations Trust in 2012. Her responsibilities included orchestrating the annual Dunedin Midwinter Carnival, a captivating event held on the longest night of winter, featuring lantern-making workshops and engaging over 80 volunteers. She further demonstrated her organisational skills by coordinating the Dunedin Pecha Kucha in 2013, bringing this Japanese presentation style to the public in an engaging evening of insightful conversations.

Following these experiences, Jenny spent 6½ years as a Visitor Host at Toitū Otago Settlers Museum, where she completed the National Certificate in Museum Practice (Level 4). Recognising her passion and skills, she pursued a Master’s in Information Studies, majoring in Archives and Records Management and Library Science, through correspondence with Victoria University of Wellington. She then served as the Archivist of Toitū Otago Settlers Museum for almost 4 years.

Currently, Jenny holds the position of Senior Archivist at Archives New Zealand Te Rua Mahara o te Kāwanatanga. She brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the preservation of the nation’s cultural heritage and governmental records, upholding the highest standards in archival practice. Jenny embraces the challenges and opportunities that come with managing historical documents of national significance.

In addition to her professional commitments, Jenny continues to give back to the community by volunteering for various Dunedin events and organisations. She is currently Co-Chair of the New Zealand Chinese Heritage Research Charitable Trust and a member of the Archives & Records Association of New Zealand Te Huinga Mahara Otago/Southland branch committee.
