I have spent decades driving across the U.S. I returned to college to learn how to write so that I might try my hand at a career where I could telecommute, instead of driving for a living. I am presently trying to earn a living as a freelance writer. The telecommuting part is still attractive, but I will admit to being unaware of the fact that there is no minimum wage for writers. I shoulda looked into this a little more closely.
I never made a great deal of money doing what I do: I have been resigned to a more intrinsic remuneration. That is probably what most failed business owners would say. I have been largely content with funding my autonomy and looking at my body of work and saying “I did that.” I have enjoyed numerous opportunities to travel and vacationed on ‘busman’s holidays’ in places that I could never afford otherwise. I have seen the sun rise over the Atlantic and set on the Pacific. I have walked through the ‘Big Trees’ of the Pacific Northwest and scarfed raw oysters in the Florida Keys. If I were to die today I would be content in the knowledge that I got to go to the beach. I would also like to think that my karmic equilibrium is supported by the fact that I have also been to Cleveland, Detroit, Atlantic City and Texas. Perhaps more importantly, I am secure in the knowledge that I have provided good service to all my clients, even those who made me go to bad places.
