Hi,
I am writing to share with you what I believe to be one of my best skills. That skill is communication. I show a great amount of respect to each person I address. I make eye contact, stay present and acknowledge what I hear, both verbally and non-verbally. I played football for three years and was a captain. Being a captain required me to use my communication skills on and off the field. I felt great responsibility for my team's performance and had to give team members negative feedback as well as positive. I was cognizant of my tone and the words I used. Sometimes I needed to yell at one of the players because he wasn't paying attention. I really enjoyed giving positive feedback as well, like telling someone they did a good job.
My mom owns her own communications company and I intern with her. She teaches business executives and sports icons to be great speakers and how to feel comfortable in front of a camera. She gives speakers the tools to be comfortable and confident in all communication situations. Recently, we watched a video of a CEO speaking on a panel and discussed his strengths and areas for improvement. Speaking is about a lot of little things, like eye contact, smiling, using gestures, movement and having passion for your topic. This CEO never smiled and was quite monotone I have learned a tremendous amount from her and only hope to keep growing and becoming a more accomplished communicator.
