JFM 'Bas' van Weelde

Paderne, Albufeira

Hi! Bom dia, guten tag, bonjour, konnichi wa, goedenmiddag,

My name is JFM van Weelde 'Bas' for short. 'Jacob' for my foreign comrades. I am a Dutch IT professional, living in Portugal and a never resting, driven workaholic, Busy for 24/365 working out new ideas, evaluating new experiences, participating in projects to extend my present level of knowledge.

Although my passport says I was born in Holland, besides this there's not so much Dutch about me. After my studies in early 80's I went abroad, staying for many years outside the country, mostly in Asia with some shorter periods in other parts of the globe. When asked me, I found myself most attracted with Japan, South Korea, and the Phiippines where I worked, got married for the first time and lived happilly for a long time.

It was during this period, the 80's that I got my hands on computers for the first time. That is, I bought myself a 8 Mhz (!!) Tandy PC enhanced with a ROM partition which I deleted immediately to make space for my own applications. The next purchase was a 20 MB HD which costed around 750 euro's! Since then computers took my soul. I was definitely lost forever. A year later Linus Torvalds 'invented' Linux, enabling me to build my own Linux kernel on a 1.44 inch floppy.

After that, the ghost went further out of the box. Businesses, running Unix started to migrate to Linux which made me getting the hang with it, giving me the opportunity to peek over the UNIX fence. Since then I specialised myself in Unix and mostly Linux, trying to get out everything of it which resulted in working with large organizations, building DNS servers, proxy's, fileservers, webservers etc. In that period I started with courses and training, Unix and Linux related. That list never ended. Techniques like High Availability, Storage, Volume Managers, Clustering and RAID became part of my daily job.

A overview of some employers

CRI (Central Police Intelligence), Mediakabel, Mtel, Dept. of Justice, VGZ insurances, the National Police, Getronics.

A overview of my technical knowledge:

IBM AIX, Sun, HP-UX, RedHat, Debian, SuSe, Ubuntu, NetBSD, FreeBSD, SCO, Solaris, HP, Digital, Compaq, High Availability, Load Balancing, shell-scripting, Puppet, firewalls, NAS-storage, network, backup strategies, etc. etc.

Too much, you might say. Not for me. Besides that there's a lot more I do in this life.
