I love teaching! Currently I am an alternative school teacher working in an independent study setting. I am excited to get to work with students one-on-one and help them to set up learning goals and watch as they achieve them. For some students this is one of the few times they have been successful in school. I love to see them discover that they are “smart” and can “do school”.
One thing I want them to learn is how technology can help them to learn and grow. You can do and learn amazing things with the use of technology. At the same time I want them to understand that everything they do in that virtual world leaves a footprint. Everything they tweet or buy is recorded there. I want them to know that this presence they create every time they log on is important. Employers, friends and others will be looking to see what kind of person they are. Are they reliable, trustworthy??? What about schools they have gone to? What does this show about their determination? As an educator I know that I can create a digital footprint that tells people what kind of teacher I am. What are my ideas? How can I share them with others? I can collaborate with other teachers, parents and students. I want to be a model for my students so that they can see that having a positive and productive digital presence can help them or hinder them as they grow into adulthood.
