Jill Mathis

JILL MATHIS grew up in Texas and studied sculpture and photography at the College of Fine Arts at the University of Texas in San Antonio. In 1988, she was accepted into the Photojournalism School at the University of Texas at Austin on merit of her portfolio. After leaving school, Jill began interning with some of the leading fashion photographers in New York City. She remained in the city becoming the full time assistant to Ralph Gibson. After living in New York for over five years she moved to Northern Italy where she lives with her husband, the sculptor, Valerio Tedeschi. Since 1996, her principle work has been on a extensive series entitled Parallel Text in which the fundamental ground finds its base in etymology. She recently published the book, Dreaming of Ingmar Bergman (Damiani Editore) which draws on her photographic/etymological survey of the places and the poetics of Bergman. Jill exhibits regularly in Europe, Asia and America and her work can be found in both private and public collections and has been cited in various university studies.
