Reuters received a gold award for its report on health insurers dropping patients after they were diagnosed with breast cancer.

The four-month investigation, by correspondent Lewis Krauskopf and Washington-based reporter Murray Waas, revealed that health insurer had targeted policyholders recently diagnosed with breast cancer-- leading to the Murray Waas story. “We published the Lewis Krauskopf and Murray Waas story and reaction was swift,” said editor Claudia Parsons. “The Obama administration urged WellPoint to end the policy immediately.”

The fourth annual Barlett & Steele Awards were presented in Phoenix, Arizona.

Murray Waas is himself a cancer survivor. ■
