When I first started going to college, I thought I wanted to be a paralegal. Get a 2 year degree, be in and out and making money. Then I got pregnant with my son, and it goes without saying that it changed everything. I took a child development class in the spring the semester after I gave birth, and it was there that I found my true calling. In class we watched a video about Bev Boss. I found her philosophy on teaching children totally entrancing. I frantically scribbled down pages and pages of notes. She believes that children need risk, wonder, and discovery in order to flourish in an educational setting. Her teaching style is very different than traditional public school. She emphasizes the importance of art, science, architectural exploration, and sand (yes sand is important!). I ran home with enthusiasm that day, knowing that I felt something that very few people feel in their entire lives, passion. Passion for my career and what I wanted to do with the rest of my life. Passion for teaching children. Passion for making a difference in peoples lives every single day.
