John Makoni
Consultant and Business Development Manager in Harare, Zimbabwe
What matters to me most is love, for God and people. I believe my purpose in life is to learn and practice God’s truth by loving others and make a positive difference in their lives (1 Corinthians 13 v 1 – 13). My love for God was instilled from childhood by my family’s Catholic Christian values and hope to reach a great place, after living a great life. I am the second born in a family of six, four boys, two girls. I aim to uphold values of love, truth, perseverance, obedience, humility, service, forgiveness, courage, diligence, peace, justice and tolerance.
My father, a headmaster, passed away in 1990 when I was 8 years old. We then moved to stay with our grandmother and mother in the high density suburb of Rutendo, in Redcliff. Since my father was the eldest, my uncle Cleophas, who has successfully turned around struggling companies on a retainer basis, took over as the head of the Makoni clan and is my mentor. I have a great love for my mother, Gladys, who has been the greatest inspiration in my life. I learnt love through example from my family. We love singing and dancing at weddings and family gatherings.
In 1992, we moved to Southwood, a low density suburb in Kwekwe. I chose friends who shared the same values and searching for a compatible life partner. This expectation has led me to inspire other youths to seek good relationships that will lead to good marriages through Theology of the Body teachings.
The year 2008, was the height of economic melt down and that situation encouraged me to self introspect and discovered that I could serve God in a special way through being a Catechist, teaching Sunday school. I always loved children and feel a lasting joy after assisting someone. I love music, so I joined the English choir and started learning to play guitar and singing turner. I also help people to solve their problems as a pastoral counsellor.
Through doing my work to the best of my ability, I will make the glory of God to be seen and inspire and guide others to follow that example. I am passionate about Management Consulting with focus on Africa's strategic problem solving, talent development, leadership coaching, leading new technology adaptation and business re-engineering. Finding meaning in my work makes me love what I do; the joys of curiosity, the delight of discovery, satisfaction from sharing and changing people’s lives. I therefore value time and aim to use it wisely since it is limited.
