Julie Mannell

Julie Mannell is a Montreal prose and poetry writer, feminist, journalist, cultural commentator, and human rights activist, originally from Fonthill, Ontario. Her style has been referred to as "Southern Ontario gothic with a spark of magical realism." Furthermore, Julie has been described as "edgy," "a literary badass," "cut throat," and "radically anti-romantic."

Julie is a cultural critic for The Huffington Post and her work has been promoted in various Canadian publications, radio and television programs. She was the first female author to be featured in the sports publication "The Barnstormer," and was recently showcased at Matrix Magazine's Pilot Reading Series.

In 2012 Julie Mannell was awarded a fellowship position at the Summer Literary Seminars in Vilnius, Lithuania.

Most recently Julie won the Lionel Shapiro Award for excellency in creative writing and the Mona Adilman poetry prize.

Julie has works forthcoming in Matrix Magazine, Weija Quarterly, Maisonneuve, and The Bull Calf Review.

Julie Mannell is also the founder and president of The McGill Creative Writing Society. She still leads weekly workshops for creatively-inclined McGill students with literary ambitions. She was named a "Campus Celebrity" by Her Campus Magazine.

In addition to writing, Julie Mannell was the youngest ever recipient of The Red Cross "Power of Humanity Award" for her political and feminist activism. She was presented the award at age 16, in recognition of her work in India, Thailand, and Sierra Leone.

In 2007 her efforts were recognized by the office of Stephen Harper. She has since had her work funded by The Milennium Foundation and was named a TD Merit Scholar. As a preteen she was named the "Junior Citizen of The Year" for Ontario.

Julie is currently finishing a novel that features a small, insular community in rural Ontario as a failed Garden of Eden. The protagonists, two catholic school girls, must navigate complex moral dilemmas through a series of hilarious misadventures. It is both philosophical and naughty.
