Jackson Measles

dive guide and Student in Laie, Hawaii

My name is Jackson Measles. I was raised in Lehi, Utah and moved to Laie for school in 2011. I began my schooling with the intentions of graduating in business management but have since changed my course. After completing a year of school I left on a mission to Florianopolis, Brazil in 2012 and returned in 2014. I promptly moved back to Laie and began working to support myself. Since then I have worked several jobs in the community until moving to Kapaa, Kauai in the beginning of 2017. There, I ran a dive a successful dive tour operation with a close friend. Around the end of summer I felt a sudden motivation to go back to school. I applied very late for BYUH and was blessed to be admitted. I moved back to Laie just this month to continue school at BYUH as a communications major.

Part of that route to a Bachelors degree in communications involves my participation in the Social Entrepreneurship class. Luckily for me this is an area that interests me greatly. Social Entrepreneurship is a form of entrepreneurship that benefits parties other than those directly involved with the organization. A few examples of these are non profit organizations such as the Red Cross, the Make-A-Wish Foundations and the Girl Scouts of America. Other examples include businesses that give back to people. The well known clothing company H&M is giving school supplies to refugee children from their earnings during this holiday season. That is a form of social entrepreneurship. The company Rice Love Bags gives a kilo of rice to a family in need for every bag sold. This is another business exercising social Entrepreneurship. Churches are another example of social entrepreneurship that some may not recognize.

I took this class because I want to broaden my understanding of what it takes to generate income by my own means and brainpower. I would love to one day work for myself and be able to help people in need while I do that. I understand that a desire to work for yourself and be successful while doing it is not unique to me. The world is full of ambitious people with great ideas that are fighting for a piece of the same pie. My hopes are that my involvement with the Entrepreneurship Department at Brigham Young University Hawaii will give me the edge necessary to succeed in this area of my life and watch my goals come to fruition. I believe that here will be a good place to network and meet other people with similar goals and ambitions that could potentially help me
