João Meireles

João Meireles is a portuguese flutist, currently working as a freelancer in Geneva and abroad.
He is currently solo flutist of the newly founded Guimarães Orchestra, in Portugal.
He colaborated with many orchestras such as the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, Philharmonie der Nationen, Ensemble Contrechamps, Geneva Camerata, among others, playing under the baton of Emmanuel Krivine, Manfred Honeck, Kazuki Yamada, David Greilsammer, Illych Rivas and others.
As a soloist, he played many concerts in Germany, Portugal and Switzerland. In 2012, he was invited to play a solo recital at the commemorations of the European Capital of Culture Guimarães.
He worked with eminent flutists such as Benoît Fromanger, Patrick Gallois, Barthold Kuyjken, Vicens Prats, etc.
Born in 1988 in Guimarães, north of Portugal, he received an early musical education and started playing the flute at age 10.
In 2000, he entered "Artave", recognized as one of the finest schools for young musicians in Portugal, where in 2006 he graduated with the highest honors. Following this period, at age 17, he moved to Freiburg i. Breisgau, Germany, to study with prof. Renate Greiss-Armin (former soloist of the Hamburg Philharmonic State Orchestra). He entered her flute class in 2007 in Karlsruhe, where he graduated as a Bachelor of Arts with honours in 2011. He moved then to Geneva, Switzerland, working with prof. Jacques Zoon, with whom he graduated as a Master of Arts, in 2013.
