Joana Branco

I began my academic career in science, completing an undergraduate degree in biology in 2007. I spent a year in Greece, with an Erasmus scholarship, where I had the opportunity to participate in two research projects about river water quality and zooplankton. After finishing my degree I moved to Spain – where I currently live – to pursue a PhD in Animal Behavior, which eventually led to a specialization in primatology. During those years I published some articles and presented my work at several national and international conferences. While I was still conducting research with primates, I switched gears to writing, and obtained a masters degree in Science Journalism, from University Carlos III. I have been a science journalist ever since.

I worked as an intern at Divulga S.L., a company dedicated to science communication, and then at Muy Interesante, the most important popular science magazine in Spain, where most of my work can be found. I’ve also participated in the writing and editing of a book about the last decade of science communication in Spain, published by the Spanish Science and Technology Foundation. And wrote a complete study about the presence of aquaculture in the Spanish press for the Spanish Aquaculture Observatory, that ended up being my research thesis for the masters degree.
