Joanny Compaore

Every supply chain leaks somewhere. Finding the leak and sealing it is the work Joanny Compaore has done for more than a decade, in settings that share almost nothing except that description. He is an entrepreneur and supply chain consultant specializing in operations optimization, currently advising companies in the mining sector with particular attention to gold and oil. The role that established his public reputation was Chief Executive Officer of SONABHY, the national oil company of Burkina Faso, where infrastructure expansion, digital transformation, and rigorous process improvement together changed how an entire country moved and stored its fuel.

Joanny Compaore ran SONABHY from May 2022 to September 2023, and the company was named Best Company of the Year for 2023 in the national review of state companies chaired by the Prime Minister.

Physical capacity was the constraint he attacked first. He championed a tank farm capacity extension delivering 100,000 additional metric tonnes of storage, which pushed the country's fuel security autonomy from 12 days out to 32. Burkina Faso is landlocked, its fuel arriving by truck from far-off seaports, so close to tripling that margin redefined what a supply disruption would actually cost. Alongside it, he led a digital transformation of the company's supply chain, deploying technology that improved both transportation visibility and data accuracy. Sales under his leadership reached 1.2 billion dollars, up 500 million from the prior year, while a separate program of process improvement across distribution operations returned 65 million dollars in savings during 2023.

His tenure was not confined to operations. He committed one million dollars of corporate social responsibility funding to medical support for wounded soldiers, and he chaired the executive committee behind SONABHY's basketball and volleyball teams, negotiating a 35 percent increase to their budget. His last major act before departing was to champion a five-year strategic plan spanning 2023 to 2028, which the company adopted.

Before the chief executive's office, Joanny Compaore spent nearly six years inside Burkina Faso's logistics machinery. As Transportation and Logistics Manager at the Direction of Logistics and Transportation from October 2013 to April 2019, he was responsible for moving approximately 972,000 tons of merchandise from seaports to inland destinations, operating roughly 500 trailers and forklifts monthly, and for directing supply chain support behind United States Africa Command assistance that reached 32 countries by sea, air, and road.

Between 2018 and 2019 he took on an additional brief as Senior Liaison Officer between U.S. Africa Command and partner African countries. The brief covered multinational logistics coordination together with support for joint training and field operations. He planned and coordinated joint logistics exercises bringing together personnel from multiple African partner nations. He designed and implemented field-feeding and transportation operations for large-scale multinational training. At the assignment's height he was arranging recurring food service, transportation, and logistical support for roughly 1,200 personnel drawn from 32 countries. Sustained collaboration with American and African stakeholders across planning, resource allocation, and execution was the daily requirement, typically in cross-cultural, high-tempo conditions in which a missed delivery registered at once.

Earlier still, from August 2011 to July 2012, he served as Logistics and Supply Chain Operations Manager for the African Union-United Nations Hybrid Operation in Darfur, posted to the Forobaranga site under the Burkina Faso peacekeeping battalion BURKBATT3. There he coordinated movement control and humanitarian services for United Nations staff and observers and planned the delivery of food and essential supplies to approximately one million internally displaced people. The United Nations Medal followed in 2012. Asked to name the accomplishment he values most, he points to Darfur. A second decoration, the Burkina Medal of Honors, reached him in 2020.

Joanny Compaore has served on the Board of Administration of the Refinery of Côte d'Ivoire as a member of its audit committee. The board meets quarterly, and his responsibility was oversight of the chief executive's compliance with regulation and procedure, together with bringing recommendations to the chairman. Among those recommendations were the adoption of SCOR DS metrics and Internet of Things instrumentation across the refinery's supply chain, which reduced lead time by 25 percent and improved customer satisfaction by 15 percent in 2023.

He consulted for Comabel SA in Abidjan from August 2024 to January 2026, where he developed logistics plans that lowered lead time by 20 percent and eliminated idle time, and drew up sustainability recommendations that cut waste and delivered more than 20 million euros in savings over 2024 and 2025.
