Jocelyn Lee
Student, Scientist, and Volunteer in Toronto, Ontario, Canada
Jocelyn is an undergraduate Biomedical Science student at Ryerson University with over six years of experience in leadership and advocacy.
As an executive previously on her course union, student society, and other student groups on campus, Jocelyn has developed a team-oriented spirit and a plethora of skills in group facilitation, time management, and creative problem-solving. These experiences have led her now to work at SciXchange—Ryerson's science outreach and communication office. While working towards making science engaging and accessible to everyone, she also serves as a program coordinator for RySciMatch and as a mentor to first year students through Tri-mentoring. As she actively encourages students to seek out resources and opportunities in the Faculty of Science, beyond her time here, she hopes to continue empowering others—particularly those from marginalized and underrepresented groups—to pursue careers in science through her lifework.
Meanwhile, amongst Jocelyn’s biggest passions include global health and poverty alleviation. Coming from a family of refugees, finding solutions to health inequities faced by the world’s most underprivileged populations is at the forefront of her career aspirations. Her resolve has only been further solidified by her time as a long-time volunteer for the Canadian Centre for Refugee and Immigrant Health Care and for Results Canada. She has lobbied Members of Parliament at Parliament Hill, has connected with advocates from around the world at the International Conference in Washington DC, and has been featured in the Toronto Star and the Oakville Beaver to raise awareness of various issues and campaigns. One day, she hopes to have enough impact in her work to improve healthcare not only in Canada, but worldwide as well.
In her free time, Jocelyn can be found playing the piano, planning her travels, or amongst the outdoors paddling in her kayak.
