Joe Matsakapetros won an Anchor Idol Contest on channel 9, WGNTV. The audition tape featured Joe and his 4-year-old son Louegee doing a take-off of a commercial of Yao the basketball player trying to cash a check. The tape was so funny that Joe became one of the five finalists. Each finalist was asked to do a one minute live anchor segment before a panel of three judges, who were local media personalities. Joe did a one-minute anchor report about forecasting weather in Greece with a goat. The media personalities laughed so hard that they had to go to a commercial break. Of the five finalists, Joe Matsakapetros won and was crowned Anchor Idol for the Day. The WGN staff decided that they had so much fun with Joe, they sent him on location to do a news spot. Joe went to North Ave Beach to the Crunch Gym to work out and interview people at the gym. To this day, people still stop Joe occasionally to ask if he is the Joe from Channel 9 In the Morning. Shortly thereafter, “Joe” received a call to do his own radio show which is how My Big Fat Greek Radio Show came about. The show, today is aired live on the internet at www.freewebs.com/twinbayradio Fridays and Saturdays, 7:00-9:00 p.m. features various segments including: Updates on local festivals, Al Cheapo (another alter-ego of Joe’s) bargains around town, Coach P.I.T.A. Inspirational motivator and Papous Corner (Grampa's Corner), which gives advice to kids and Greek recipes. Greek and American music is played throughout the show.
