Joseph "Joey" Vulpis is a American Rock Climber, Entrepreneur, Professional Mountain Guide, Search & Rescue/Mountain Rescue Instructor/Expert, Author and Wilderness Medicine Instructor. He is the owner and program director of 'Northeast Mountain Guiding', Former Secretary of the Board of Directors and Board Member for the Professional Climbing Guides Institute and co-founder and President for the American Hiking Guides Association. Joey has first ascents climb in various parks through out the tri-state area (NJ, NY & PA). In 2012 Joey, with the help of South Aberdeen EMS, started Bayshore Search & Rescue (BSAR). This SAR team serves the central New Jersey area for wilderness Search & Rescue missions. Joey is also the founder of the first outdoor adventure franchise in the United States, Ultimate Outdoor Adventures. He is the author of Garden State Climbing, A Climbing Guide to Allamuchy State Park, A Climber's Guide to Knots/Hitches/Bends and the History of Rock Climbing in NJ. Joey is also a co-founder of Mid-Atlantic Mountain Rescue (2011) which is run by the National Guard and several State Police agencies in the Mid-Atlantic region. He is a co-founder of the National Canyoneering Guides Association (2003).
Joey has also been a huge influence on the outdoor education and adventure industry in the United States and helped establish it in 2014 with the US Department of Labor. His company, Northeast Mountain Guiding (NMG), is one of the largest in the Eastern US and employees some of the top professionals in the industry. NMG is well known in the industry and has changed the face of the guiding industry. NMG has taken the guiding industry by storm and continues to do so after Joey partnered up with Bryan Enberg and opened up a Professional Services Division to offer Search & Rescue and Mountain Rescue training to volunteers and professionals. Bryan was the NMG Vice President from 2012 to 2017.
In 2020, Matthew Novellino became the Vice President of NMG and opened its government contract work up into Special Operations with SOCOM operators. NMG has been a government contractor since 2016, a sub-contractor on government contracts since 2009 and one of the only guide services to work directly with the US Marshals, USSS agents and SOCOM. In 2021, Joey and Matt both founded the National Rescue & Response Institute (NRRI) with the Department of Homeland Security.
