John Woodger

Lawyer-Linguist

After completing my legal studies (with a one-year specialisation in finance) in the UK and Spain, I worked as legal and programme officer charged with project research, contractual drafting and overall facilitation of advisory, consultancy and training work - covering a host of fields, from CSR and e-democracy policies to the EU ETS and Basel rules - for government agencies, MNCs and NPOs, with ad hoc resources drawn from research centres, think tanks and academic institutions.

After 5 years of doing translation work in and out of office hours, I sat a competitive examination (held by the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs) and became a Certified Translator-Interpreter. Within a couple of years the workload was such that I took the plunge and freelanced full time, delivering annual Legal English courses for the Spanish and Madrid General Government and authoring comparative law articles published in specialist magazines.

As of September 2013, I am the senior in-house lawyer-linguist at a leading Spanish law firm, with offices not only in Spain's major cities, but also in Brussels, Lisbon, London and New York.
