John Black

Head of school at Valley Preparatory in Redlands, California, John Black: Head of School, oversees the daily activities of a diverse faculty and staff and 160 students from preschool to 8th grade. His accomplishments at Valley Prep include implementing new standards-based grading protocol as well as an International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years program and a STEAM (science, technology, engineering, the arts, and mathematics) program. John Black has also reached out to the local community by authoring several op-ed and guest commentary pieces for the local newspaper.
Dr. Black has a broad history of school leadership as a principal and headmaster in the United States and overseas. While at Fairfax, California’s St. Rita School from 2013 to 2015, he instituted STEAM/IB learning and oversaw its merger with a charter institution. He embarked on his administrative career in 1999 after securing his doctor of education from California Coast University.
A San Bernardino County resident, John Black lives near Redlands in the smaller community of Highland, California. When he isn’t working, he enjoys spending time with his five teenage and adult children.
