John Bumgarner is an executive, entrepreneur, international strategist, data scientist, threat and vulnerability researcher, and international public speaker with more than two decades of cybersecurity experience across multiple domains.

He is also a former US Marine and US Army Special Operations soldier. During his military career, John worked on six continents and spent years working inside the Beltway at multiple intelligence agencies. A veteran of several armed foreign conflicts (Lebanon, Libya, Panama), he has received multiple military awards and decorations, including for heroism.

Previously, he was a Senior Research Fellow in Security Studies at the Fletcher School. He has lectured at the Naval Postgraduate School, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and the Royal United Service Institute.

John has also spoken at more than 40 conferences worldwide, including the Network Centric Warfare conference in Belgium, the Cyber Defense conference in Denmark, the Cyber Conflict Policy and Legal conference in Estonia, the MEXSEC conference in Mexico and the RSA conference in the United States.

His articles have appeared in the Journal of the Information System Security Association, the Homeland Security Journal, the Information Operations Journal, Counter Terrorist magazine, the Asia-Pacific Defense Forum, and the National Defense Digest of Taiwan.

He has been frequently sought out by media organizations such as the BBC, the Christian Science Monitor, the Guardian, Jane's Defence Weekly, National Public Radio, and Reuters for his views on cybersecurity and cyberconflict. John has been cited in numerous books and in multiple industry and academic publications.

John holds several industry certifications in cybersecurity, including the CISSP and SSCP from ISC2, a GIAC Certified Incident Handler (gold level) from the SANS Institute, and multiple NSA certifications. He is a contributing member of the SANS Analyst Program, and also volunteers with ISC2 to develop content for the CISSP and SSCP exams.

In his free time, John not only hones his programming skills but also works on improving his photographic and cooking techniques. The latter has won him multiple awards at the North Carolina State Fair.
