John Buzzard
San Antonio, TX
I was born in St. Louis, raised in Alabama, and educated in Maryland. I am a career educator with experience in project-based learning (PBL), game-based learning, and promoting student ownership.
My cover photo shows my feet and the Grand Canyon, a picture taken while I was traveling with students for a course on "The American West". I have taught numerous travel courses, and they are just one type of experiential learning that i believe can be valuable to students. I am also a strong supporter of Socratic Seminar, the main method I learned with at St. John's College, Annapolis, and a great way to both empower students and to push them to a deeper level of thought.
Currently I am the founding Head of School of Anne Frank Inspire Academy, opening August of 2014. I am excited by the opportunity to develop and operate a school that is founded on the same principles that I have always followed, promoting collaboration, critical thinking, student ownership, and rigorous expectations.
When I am not working, I can typically be found cooking a gourmet meal, reading about complexity and emergence, or pursuing my interests in history and science. Ok, to be honest, when I am not working I am usually playing with my two young daughters or running errands, but I try to squeeze those other things in as well!
