Hospitality excites John most, serving as his intense motivation to make a huge difference in the industry as a whole. His experience in the sector began at a five star property in the front-service department, where he served as a midnight doorman. With experience and in time, he grew consistently in the industry and ultimately held the position of Executive Vice President. Mr. Canavan is grateful of how his experiences have given him a unique perspective, enabling him to develop the ability to tie in all aspects of a property in a cohesive strategic management style while delivering productive results.
John Canavan also has a great passion for coaching and guiding people in their professional growth, using his down-to-earth yet professional leadership style to inspire and empower employees to optimize their fullest potential in order to succeed in their career in hospitality. Before he established InterimGM, John Canavan sat as the Executive Vice President of 47th Street Management Co., LLC, a business that operated nonresidential buildings. Prior to that, John served as the General Manager at 228 Hotel Corp. from August 2004 till August 2013. He was also the Principal of FocuStrategy from July 2001 until August 2004.
John Canavan attended New York University, studying Business Administration. He also went to the Center for Management Research to study Strategic Planning and Decision Making. John Canavan has authored two books that aim to share his intense knowledge in coaching and developing professionals who are poised for successful growth in their careers. The books are called FocuStrategy: Navigating Your Professional Growth and FocuStrategy: Vol II: Navigating Your Office and Leadership Challenges. Through his writings, John hopes to bring many workplace issues and challenges into focus in order that solutions and conclusions can be effectively arrived at while enabling career people to navigate the workplace minefield.
