At the tender age of three, John's parents quickly discovered his propensity for drawing and creating "his own little worlds". He was encouraged by his family to draw and paint throughout his most excellent childhood. He graduated High School and joined the US Navy in 1981. For a number of years, he served his country amongst the crew of the USS Saginaw LST-1188. He married his high-school sweetheart, Sherri, and they raised up two great sons, Chris and Jeremy. Upon leaving the military, he, like many others, went from job to job until his friend, Trey Peaden, asked him if he'd like to set up a tiny airbrushing gig in 1986. Trey showed him the ins and outs of "retail garment painting" and it was a reliable and profitable source of income. While in Pensacola, John met Todd Faehnrich, a classically trained Master Artist, who taught, tutored, trained and educated John for five years in the ways of the old masters. John learned at an almost exponential rate and immediately applied this new knowledge to his work. Says John, "Master Faehnrich has had the greatest influence on my life as an artist."
John continues to hone his skills, and produce and sell his own brand of art using pastel, watercolor, and acrylic. He successfully applies the rules and techniques of the old masters to his "imaginative" creations which he says, "...gives them more life and a somewhat classical feel. It makes them more believable". He continues to draw and paint in his home studio as a freelance illustrator/ artist and has published works in several books as well as private and commercial commissions. He has recently made some of his works available as prints at www.fineartamerica.com which are already proving to be successful. When asked what kind of artist he is, John replies that he is an all-round artist. In that, he is able to paint gorgeous renderings of birds, flowers, and portraits and then, paint some of the most "wickedly cool" fantasy Sci-Fi "critters" ever. He claims that he doesn't want to "Specialize" in any one medium or subject because it would limit his desire to give equal time to everything he would like to work on.
