John Goldsmith
Based in Vancouver, Canada
I am a professional photographer based in Vancouver, Canada. Born in Detroit, I have a masters degree in chemistry and have worked as an R&D scientist. But my interest piqued in another kind of lab: the photography darkroom at Chicago’s Jane Addams Center. A career flip came when I made the move north (and west) across the 49th parallel and into Canada.
My photographs are widely circulated in commercial & editorial uses. These include projects commissioned by national magazines, including a cover-shoot with Lululemon Athletica's CEO and a photoshoot for the 2010 Winter Olympics. I regularly photograph weddings and events in the photojournalistic style of street photography. As with personal projects, commissioned work is driven strongly by a visual storytelling approach accented with a creative aesthetic.
My personal fine art photography delves into social aspects of people inhabiting the built environment. These pictures incorporate a theatrical mood with the aesthetics and candor of contemporary street photography with a post-modern psyche. My artwork draws from the rich history of documentary photography and has been featured as part of prestigious exhibitions and is held in numerous privately held collections.
I am a founding member of Strange.rs Collective and a contributor to Street Reverb Magazine. In 2007, I authored an article for Photosho Magazine and recently PhotoEd Magazine published an in depth interview my artwork. Having an interest in the artistic, educational, and philosophical aspects of photography, I am regularly invited to give talks to local camera clubs, including a 2012 invited lecture at the University of British Columbia, and judge photography contests. In 2012, I published the book, 'Drop Out of Art School,' a documentary photography project about a changing Vancouver neighborhood.
I'm am available for a wide variety of editorial assignments and commissioned projects. Please inquire for details and visit my portfolio and website at John Goldsmith Photography.
