Strategic Governance, Ethical Leadership, and Trusted Wisdom

John is an experienced Board Chair, Board Director, and strategic advisor who has guided boards, CEOs, and executive teams through major challenges and transitions. Known for his thoughtful leadership and clear strategic thinking, he helps organizations navigate change, manage risk, and plan for long-term success in a rapidly evolving business environment.

John began his career in artificial intelligence, publishing early research with the RAND Corporation. More than 40 years later, his work continues to be cited regularly—he still receives citation alerts at least twice a week—highlighting the lasting value of his contributions to the field.

As a Board Chair, John is known for building effective, engaged boards that focus on strategic oversight while staying adaptable. He has helped boards work through common issues such as misalignment among directors, varying levels of engagement, and the need for board renewal. He promotes open dialogue, clear accountability, and a shared sense of purpose in the boardroom.

John also works closely with CEOs, serving as a supportive and candid partner. He offers honest, constructive guidance while respecting the line between governance and management. This balanced approach has helped leadership teams navigate disruption, pursue innovation, and lead with confidence.

In addition to his board leadership, John advises boards, individual directors, CEOs, and other C-suite leaders. His expertise is especially valued during leadership transitions, strategic planning, governance assessments, and when managing complex interpersonal dynamics.

Hotta is also the author of a respected book published by De Gruyter Brill academic press that brings together insights from more than forty experienced board directors. Used by graduate students studying corporate governance, the book is recognized as a practical and insightful resource for understanding board leadership and decision-making.
