John Macoviak

After completing his undergraduate degree at Georgetown University, John Macoviak MD MBA obtained a master's degree from the university’s school of medicine in 1977. He graduated magna cum laude, and later completed residencies in general surgery and cardiothoracic surgery and transplantation at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and Stanford University, respectively. From there, John Macoviak, MD, held surgeon and professor positions at his alma mater, as well as at multiple other prestigious academic institutions.
While serving as assistant professor of cardiothoracic surgery at Georgetown University, Dr. John Macoviak became the first heart surgeon in Washington, DC, to perform a heart transplant. He went on to complete 30 successful transplants during his time at the school. In addition to his academic positions, he served 3 years as chief medical officer of a California-based medical company.
Dr. Macoviak has authored hundreds of peer-reviewed articles throughout his career, and served as a consultant with the American Institute of Biological Sciences for a NASA Space Medicine peer review panel. In addition to his medical education, he holds an MBA from the University of California Irvine.
