John Mayo

Friends and family, food, travel and learning are just a few of my passions. I live in Springfield, Massachusetts with my wife and puppy. I have traveled to wonderful far away places like Great Britain, Italy, and Morocco. I love experiencing diverse cultures and diverse foods. I have had the pleasure of catching a glimpse of Queen Elizabeth II. In Morocco, I got to ride a camel (who managed to find and subsequently ate the only vegetation for miles), then watch the sunrise in the Sahara desert

As a student affairs educator I work as Area Coordinator for Traditional Housing at Western New England University. In addition to residence life, I have experiences working in housing operations and student leadership development at very diverse campuses. Like many student affairs professionals, my family still doesn’t understand what I do, so I say I teach life skills to college students.

I hold a bachelor’s degree in history and a minor in art and military history from Bridgewater State College. I went on to earn a master’s degree in student affairs in higher education from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. I am also working towards a second master’s degree in organizational leadership from Gonzaga University and I anticipate finishing in fall 2012.

As a student affairs educator, I believe in a holistic approach to student development. College is such a transformative time in life and I love making an impact on my students. I am a firm believer in Maslow’s hierarchy of needs and as such I strive to provide the best on-campus living experience possible. I can truly say that I love my job and my students influence me as much as I influence them.
