Ever since social media exploded on the internets, bursting forth like vomit through the fingers of a sorority pledge on a Thursday night, the task of summarizing one’s life and persona has become practically commonplace. Fifteen years ago, this sort of reflection was reserved for a dating service profile or a cover letter. Rare was the occasion that any sort of self-summary would need writing. Now, thanks to Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, Friendster, GeoCities, Flickr, Google PlusOne, Ning, Digg, Buzz, Bugg, Jagg, and Zumba* I can recite my self-description from memory. “I find interest in almost everything. I’m easily amused. And perpetually, perhaps terminally, intrigued. I’m passionate about too many things. And fervently apathetic about most of the rest.” Sometimes I read it and think, “Wow. Is that ever douche-y.” Other times, I think it’s fairly accurate, and a nice little piece of writing.
