Jonace Manyasa is a Tanzanian author and lecturer at the University of Dar es Salaam. He was awarded second place in the 2025 618 Editions International Short Story Competition, a prestigious global literary contest hosted by 618 Editions, a Dubai-based publisher known for celebrating bold and evocative storytelling from around the world.
His short story, “The Voice Beneath the Canopy,” was praised by the judges as “layered, lyrical, and haunting in all the best ways.” The story explores themes of ancestral memory, lost histories, and the emotional ties between people and the land. This international recognition cements Manyasa’s place among the rising literary voices of the continent.
This achievement follows the earlier international publication of his story “A Death by the Shore” by Brittle Paper, a U.S.-based literary magazine widely respected for promoting African literature. That story, set along the Tanzanian coastline, marked the beginning of Manyasa’s exposure to global literary audiences.
Beyond short fiction, Jonace Manyasa has authored several acclaimed novels published by Tanzania Educational Publishers Ltd (TEPU). His works include:
Shadows of Secrets – A suspenseful tale of family secrets and generational silence
Foul Desires – A gritty narrative about corruption, power, and obsession in urban Tanzania
Rachel’s Destiny – A moving story of a young woman’s strength and the pursuit of freedom
The Lost Kiss – A tender exploration of love, regret, and emotional renewal
Notably, some of these novels are currently used in Tanzanian universities, affirming their literary and educational value in academic curricula.
