A graduate of Vassar College who majored in Chinese and cognitive science, journalist Jonathan Kaiman received a Fulbright U.S Student scholarship to spend a year recording traditional songs and stories in China's Sichuan province. He built upon this experience as a journalist, first as a research intern with the New York Times’ Beijing bureau and then as a China correspondent for The Guardian. During this time, Jonathan Kaiman wrote hundreds of features and was recognized for this work by being shortlisted for One World Media’s New Voice Award.

In 2015, Jon Kaiman joined the Los Angeles Times as an Asia correspondent. Over the next year, he made frequent appearances on the BBC, NPR, PRI, and other media networks to discuss issues related to Asia. He also penned numerous stories that appeared on the front page of the LA Times.

Since August 2016, Jon Kaiman has served as the Beijing bureau chief for the LA Times, a role in which he manages both full-time staff and a team of freelancers throughout North, East, and Southeast Asia. His work has received support and recognition from organizations such as the Pulitzer Center for Crisis Reporting, which awarded him a grant to report on rising Chinese influence in Africa.
