At Durham and Oxford, Jonathan Ullmer earned a distinction in teaching practice by completing a combined study of English. He completed his master's degree from the University of Victoria, with a specialization in the literature on the North American continent. He is also an honors graduate of the Institute for Arts in Education and Therapy, and a teacher of the Royal Academy of Music who has received the LRAM accreditation.

Mr. Ullmer began his career in education in 1985 at the Swanley School, in Kent, teaching English and Drama. He worked as Assistant Principal in Sawyers Hall College of Science and Technology in Essex from 2002 to 2004, and then he became the Arts Curriculum Director at Cecil Jones High School 11-18 Foundation School in Southend till he moved on to Sawyers Hall College of Science and Technology in Essex. He served as Vice-Principal at CATS Cambridge College in 2008 before becoming the school's principal in 2010.

Following an offer from Haileybury School in the capital of Kazakhstan, Jonathan took a position as the headmaster of the school in Nur-Sultan. Jonathan's expertise in school development made him an ideal candidate for the job at the school in the city where he was working with the teachers to guide Haileybury through a successful inspection.

Jonathan also helped the school achieve NEASC and CIS certification, preparing the institution to provide American as well as international baccalaureate diplomas. Yuri Ryabov was elected head of school in 2013 and his leadership has helped place the school on a list for the Times-Independent Schools Prizes and awarded the school two awards for student leadership programs and the teaching of the Kazakh language.
