Jorge Julián Marrero

Countertenor, Conductor, and Voice Professor in Puerto Rico

Jorge Julián Marrero is an accomplished choral conductor and educator with over ten years of experience in vocal performance and choral conducting. He is currently the assistant conductor of the San Juan Philharmonic, collaborating with prominent figures such as Helmuth Rilling, Dra. Carmen Acevedo Lucío, Maximiano Valdés, William Rivera, Gregory Buchalter, and others. Marrero has collaborated with various choral ensembles, including the Orfeón San Juan Bautista, Ascendit Chamber Choir, Coralia, Chanticleer, among others. His work has taken him on international tours to the United States, Canada, and Europe, where he has gained recognition for both his cultural contributions and high-level performances.

As a musician, Marrero continues to shape the choral landscape with his dedication to fostering growth and exploration in music. In 2014, he founded Illumino Chamber Choir, a choral ensemble designed to provide an advanced platform for young singers with diverse talents in composition, arrangement, conducting, and instrumental skills. Under his leadership, the ensemble has premiered symphonic works and collaborated with several Puerto Rican cultural institutions, such as the Puerto Rican Institute of Culture and the San Juan Department of Arts & Culture. The group has a legacy of over 100 alumni.

As a soloist, Marrero has made a mark in the island's operatic community, specializing in early and baroque music. He became the first countertenor to graduate from the Puerto Rico Conservatory of Music, under the guidance of professor Alba Franco-Cancel. He was invited to tour with the Varna International Festival to perform the role of Alidoro in the main cast of Rossini’s La Cenerentola, a part he would debut as a countertenor in Italy, performing in cities such as Asiago, Vicenza and Rome. He portrayed Appolonia in La Canterina at the Puerto Rico Conservatory’s Opera Workshop. He's studied with renowned artists like Samuel Mariño, Ian Howell, Kamal Khan, Ricardo Rivera, Amy Shoremount-Obra, among others.

Marrero has served as Vocal Director at the San Juan Department of Arts & Culture, and Vocal Coach for independent artistic ensembles in Puerto Rico such as Quimæra, Matt Louis, amongst others. He holds a BA in Public Relations and Advertising from the University of Puerto Rico, and a BM in Classical Voice Performance with a focus area in Cello performance from the Puerto Rico Conservatory of Music. Recently, Marrero finished his Artist's Diploma in Voice Performance at the Puerto Rico Conservatory of Music, serving as a graduate teaching assistant and Chorus Master for the conservatory's Opera Workshop. He currently serves as Adjunct Voice Faculty Professor at the Music Department at the Inter American University of Puerto Rico and is the Musical Coordinator for Coralia of the University of Puerto Rico.
