Prof. Meri is a historian of interfaith relations in the Middle East in past and present and a historian of religions. He is Visiting Associate Professor at Georgetown University-Qatar.
Prof. Meri’s research interests include Muslim-non-Muslim relations, Religious Pluralism, Co-existence and Tolerance in the Middle East, History and Memory.
Born in the United States Professor Meri hails from a Jerusalemite family. During Spring 2023, Meri was an adjunct professor at GU-Q. In addition to his present appointment as a visiting professor, he is also an Associate of the Alwaleed Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding (Georgetown, D.C.). From 2018-2023 Meri was a faculty member of Hamad bin Khalifa University, Education City, Doha, Qatar. He was a Senior Associate of the Center for the Study of Jewish-Christian-Muslim Relations, Merrimack College until 2020 when the Center closed. From 2014-15 he was Visiting Professor in the Department of Studies of Islam in the Contemporary World, University of Jordan. From 2013-2014 he was Allianz Visiting Professor of Islamic Studies in the Institute for the Near and Middle East, Ludwig Maximilians-University of Munich. From 2010-13 he was a Fellow of St. Edmund's College, Cambridge University and served as Academic Director, Woolf Institute, Cambridge. He has travelled extensively throughout the Middle East and Europe and has lived in Oxford, London, Cambridge, Cairo, Damascus, Jerusalem, and Amman.
Meri's forthcoming publications include "Abraham's Sanctuary: A Very Short History" (New York and Oxford: Oxford University Press, in progress), "A History of Interfaith Relations in the Middle East and Mediterranean" (Toronto: University of Toronto Press, in progress) and "Pilgrims and Pilgrimage in Islam" (Edinburgh: Edinburgh University Press, in progress). Meri has also translated three treatises on medieval Arabic logic by Al-Ghazali, "The Correct Balance (Al-Qisṭās al-Mustaqīm)", "Intellectual Insights (Al-Maʿārif al-ʿAqliyya)", and "Standard of Knowledge (Miʿyār al-ʿIlm)" by Abū Ḥāmid al-Ghazālī (2024), which will be published with a scholarly introduction by a leading publisher.
