Jose Miguel Ortiz
Jose has a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the School of Visual Arts and is a practicing artist and art educator. Jose is the Student Opportunities and Support Coordinator for The Joan Mitchell Foundation in NYC and has worked as an Artist Educator for The Children's Art Carnival, The Joan Mitchell Foundation, Anyone Can Fly Foundation, The Romare Bearden Foundation, Henry Street Settlement Program and The McBurney YMCA After School Program. He is a recipient of many awards, locally and nationally including the First Prize for the National Congressional Youth Art Competition, Art With Kids Grant, and Bob Blackburn Printmakers Workshop Apprentice Scholarship.
In addition to his visual arts experiences, Jose has presented video documentation for PEPATIAN, a Bronx- based artists collective;; collaborated with choreographer/performance artist Sita Frederick in developing and presenting a multi-media project entitled "BITTERSUITE" which addresses colonial and contemporary sugar production in the Dominican Republic and ethnicity in the Dominican Diaspora; and presented works with Josefina Baez of Ayombe Theatre which included video and photo documentation and development of "Dominicanish," a non-linear expression of our non-linear life poetic and non-sensical texts pertaining to unofficial stories and undocumented histories.
