Toronto

Joseph is an accomplished, achievement-driven early career research scientist with more than 7 years of postdoctoral research experience and over 17 years of research experience in Canada, Singapore and India in the areas of neuro-immunology, virology and bacteriology. His research has been published in over 27 peer-reviewed journals, most notably in Nature Neuroscience, Journal of Immunology and Science Signaling. As the technical lead in collaboration with Integrated Biotherapeutics, USA, he was instrumental in producing therapeutic antibodies against Ebola virus by phage display technology at the Donnelly Center in Toronto in the laboratory of Dr Sachdev Sidhu. As a CIHR postdoctoral fellow in the laboratory of Dr Jorge Filmus at Sunnybrook Research Institute, Joseph performed cell biology experiments examining Wnt-Frizzled receptor endocytosis, development of renal carcinoma cell lines stably expressing Glypicans and maintaining transgenic mouse colonies. His MCMM/OMRI postdoctoral fellowship at the Hospital for Sick Children in the laboratory of Dr Freda Miller uncovered novel roles for microglia in brain development and disease. As a PhD Scholar in Dr. Christopher Power’s laboratory at the University of Calgary, Joseph helped define retroviral neuropathogenesis in the context of Multiple Sclerosis using mRNA expression profiling, qPCR quantification of endogenous retroviruses and understanding the innate immune response to viral pathogens. During his tenure as a Junior Research Fellow in the laboratory of Prof Jimmy Kwang at Temasek Laboratories in Singapore, he designed a capture ELISA system to detect IL-1b. Previously, in the laboratory of Dr K.M. Shankar (KVASU, India), he developed and characterized cell lines from Indian major carps.

Presently, as a Research Associate in the laboratory of Dr Kelly MacDonald at Mount Sinai Hospital, he supervises graduate students, manages research projects, assists in grant writing and supports the HIV Research Program in every possible way
