Joseph Sherman

As founder and President of The Reliant Group in San Francisco, Joseph Sherman oversees a diversified real estate development and investment company, focused on acquisition and development of multifamily housing. At the helm of The Reliant Group since 1993, Mr. Sherman brings more than 30 years of relevant experience to his work, along with an impeccable history of achievement in the production of low- to moderate-income housing. With demonstrated expertise navigating complex real estate situations, Joseph Sherman routinely handles the development, financing, and rehabilitation of market-rate and affordable multifamily housing properties across the United States. Mr. Sherman and the team at The Reliant Group have developed and acquired over $1.8 billion of real estate debt and equity assets over the last two decades, including over $500 million of multifamily assets. He has specialized in affordable housing, creating a unique series of investment funds that have increased both the quality and quantity of low- and moderate-income housing.

In addition to his work at The Reliant Group, Joseph Sherman plays an integral role with philanthropic organizations in San Francisco and beyond by volunteering his time, energy, and resources to educational, social, and cultural causes. The founder and President of the Board of Directors of the Rainbow Housing Assistance Corporation, Mr. Sherman has been a pioneer of service-enriched housing for low-income residents. He was also a founder of Equality Community Housing, another affordable housing nonprofit organization. Joseph Sherman serves as a Trustee of The Bay School of San Francisco, is the President of the Board of the Texas Council of Foundation for Social Resources, and donates to Gateway High School, the Jewish Community Federation, and the San Francisco Jazz Organization, among other groups.

Prior to the formation of The Reliant Group, Mr. Sherman practiced real estate law with Lane & Edson, PC, in Washington, D.C. He was also a Vice President with Oxford Development Corporation, where he specialized in tax exempt financing for multifamily housing and later was a senior Vice President with Metric Partners, before founding The Reliant Group nearly 20 years ago. An honors graduate of the Georgetown University Law Center and Bowdoin College, Joseph Sherman earned his Juris Doctor and Bachelor of Arts from those respective schools before launching his entrep
