Joseph Simmons

Oberlin, OH

A rising senior at Oberlin's Conservatory of Music, Joseph currently studies jazz guitar with Director of Jazz Studies Bobby Ferrazza. Under Professor Ferrazza's instruction, Joseph has accelerated his skills as a soloist and accompanist. Additionally, Joseph has received instruction from renowned pianist Dan Wall, arranger/multi-instrumentalist Jay Ashby, and percussionist Jamey Haddad, whose work spans a wide range of genres.

Aside from his regular lessons with Professor Ferrazza, Joseph is studying classical guitar with conservatory Professor Stephen Aron to further extend his love of music and his abilities.

Starting on piano at a young age, Joseph has been performing since grade school. He has led and performed in several groups during high school, becoming comfortable playing in various settings, including festivals, benefits, private parties, galas, and restaurants.

Joseph currently works in the Special Collections section of the Conservatory Library, preserving and archiving Oberlin Alumnus Jim Neumann's historic gift of jazz memorabilia. The job includes working with the largest private album collection in the country -- a constant source of musical inspiration and exposure.
