A hospitalist at Samaritan Pacific Communities Hospital in Newport, Oregon, Dr. Joshua “Josh” Estep utilized his MD as a volunteer for the Medical Missions Network for more than a decade. Working to bring modern medical capabilities to underserved communities, Josh Estep, MD, helped establish free dental and medical clinics in more than a dozen countries. In addition to working in the field, he assisted with fundraising initiatives and managed medical supplies and medications.

Dr. Joshua “Josh” Estep went on to conducted research on prion diseases as part of a postdoctoral fellowship at the Prion Research Center at Colorado State University. He created a test capable of detecting brain damage and infection prior to the onset of symptoms, and gave a poster presentation on the topic at the Prion Conference in Edinburgh, United Kingdom, in 2017. That same year, he co-authored the research paper “Complement Regulatory Protein Factor H Is a Soluble Prion Receptor That Potentiates Peripheral Prion Pathogenesis,” which appeared in the Journal of Immunology.

Today, Dr. Josh Estep draws on his experience to care for patients in rural areas in and around Newport, Oregon. As an attending physician, he oversees 25 beds in the nonprofit, critical access hospital.
