1993 Caddilac DeVille, a gold standard of luxury . . . back in 1993 of course. Oh, how the mighty have fallen . . .
Now, the story behind this car is that one of my roommates had a 1996 Nissan Altima that was crapping out on them, so they needed to find a new car quickly. One of the listings was somewhere 45 minutes from here in Athens so we decided to go with him to help check the car out. When we got there, we found quite a few junkers but one car that caught my eye was an old 1992 Cadillac DeVille. It had seen better days but as soon as I test-drove that car I knew I had to have it. Now, the old man was asking $2200 for it which was ridiculous since the KBB value of such a car was anywhere between $1100 and $1500. And while I could say no to the old man, I couldn’t say no to the feeling that I got from driving such a piece of Americana.
And so my search began, I scoured E-bay, Autotrader, and all other online stores to find what I was looking for. Eventually, I found one on the Facebook Marketplace where an old man had listed a 1993 Cadillac DeVille “Gold Package”. I overcame any doubts I had on whether or not this was a good idea and decided to hit the guy up. I went to see the car and again was reconnected with a sense of the glory days of American auto manufacturing. I pooled my resources and managed to get this beauty for a lot less than the first old man. The importance behind this car is not the materialistic value (it pales in comparison to amenities found in modern luxury cars) but of the fact that it was something that I did on my own. I turned the fantasy into reality, and every day I drive it, I can’t help but have a smile on my face.
